Exponential Equations

Let's take a look at some examples to review how to solve exponential equations.

Some equations can be solved by writing each side using a common base.

Example

Solve LaTeX: \left(\frac{1}{3}\right)^x=81(13)x=81.

Solution

LaTeX: \left(\frac{1}{3}\right)^x=81(13)x=81

LaTeX: \left(3^{-1}\right)^x=3^4(31)x=34

LaTeX: 3^{-x}=3^43x=34

LaTeX: -x=4x=4

LaTeX: x=-4x=4

Example

Solve LaTeX: 2^{x+4}=8^{x-6}2x+4=8x6

Solution

LaTeX: 2^{x+4}=8^{x-6}2x+4=8x6

LaTeX: 2^{x+4}=\left(2^3\right)^{x-6}2x+4=(23)x6

LaTeX: 2^{x+4}=2^{3x-18}2x+4=23x18

LaTeX: x+4=3x-18x+4=3x18

LaTeX: -2x=-222x=22

LaTeX: x=11x=11

Here is an example with a fractional exponent.

Example

Solve LaTeX: x^{\frac{3}{4}}=81x34=81

Solution

LaTeX: x^{\frac{3}{4}}=81x34=81

LaTeX: \left(\sqrt[3]{x}\right)^4=81(3x)4=81

Taking the fourth root of both sides and using a LaTeX: \pm.±.

LaTeX: \sqrt[3]{x}=\pm33x=±3

Cubing both sides.

LaTeX: x=\pm27x=±27
