Welcome to Human Anatomy! In this course we examine the structure (anatomy) of the human body. We begin with a brief overview of the subject and then work our way up to the organ system level by starting with cells and tissues. The organ systems we will study are the integumentary (skin), skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems.
Throughout the course we will stress the relationship between structure and function (complementarity), the levels of organization within the body, the interrelationships between the organ systems and the importance of maintaining relatively stable internal conditions (homeostasis) for health. We will also examine what happens when this relative stability is lost and illness results. As you progress through the course, you will also learn a new language essential for accurate and concise communication.
This course is taught with in person labs room 2736 of the science building and uses models, microscopy, video and online resources, animal dissection, and a cadaver dissection. The lecture is also taught in person in room 0445 of the Student Services building. There is also a narrated powerpoint lecture that can be accessed through the class website if you would like to hear the lecture a second time. It may contain the occasional verbal reference to online lab materials that we will not use this semester. Keep in mind you need to run the slide show for the narration to match the slides.
Assessment
There are weekly lab assignments to submit through canvas, 5 exams that each have a practical and theory component. There is also a 6 page essay due the 12th week of class.
Catalog Description:
The physical structure of the human body as an integrated unit is studied. The course content is appropriate for majors in Physical and Health Education; Nursing; Physical, Occupational and Respiratory therapy; Paramedical; Physician Assistant programs. Microscopy, mammals, cadavers, models, charts, and student self-reference are used throughout the course.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the structure of the human body including both normal and pathological conditions.
- Explain how the structure of the human body relates to its function.
- Identify and draw microscope sections and determine the relationship between the sections and the three-dimensional structures of the body.
- Demonstrate ability to perform human cadaver dissection.
Course Requirements and Grading
- RECOMMENDED: One term biological science.
- Workload: To get the most benefit from the course you should approach this course as you would an in-person class. Expect to spend 15 hrs a week
Textbook and lab manual readings should be completed before the topic is covered in lecture or lab. Expect to read and study the material several times.
How to contact me.
Anatomy is a challenging enough subject without having to learn a new online environment at the same time but there is a lot of help available to you.
I want every student in my class to succeed. Please feel free to contact me with any concerns you may have. The best way to contact me is by emailing through canvas. I will reply to emails within 24hrs Monday to Friday and within 48 hrs on weekends.
If canvas is not working for some reason, you can email me at dseth@solano.edu. Please make sure to include Bio 04 in the subject line so I am notified when you send it.
