Welcome to Nurse 111: Medical Terminology. Medical Terminology is the study of the language of medicine. All those who practice in the medical field need a common language and knowledge base in order to communicate effectively.

I am adjunct faculty for the health occupations department. My other part-time job is a post-anesthesia care (PACU) nurse for Sutter Solano Medical Center. I work every other day at this facility. NURS 111 Medical Terminology 3.0 Units Hours: 48-54 lecture
Basic computer navigation skills and frequent internet access is required. A study of the language of medicine. The student will develop a working knowledge of terms, word roots, and abbreviations related to structure and functioning of the systems of the body as they pertain to medical practice.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to demonstrate the following:
- Create medical terms by using the four components of word building
- Break down medical terms into their basic components
- Determine the meaning of the medical term based on their basic components
- create medical abbreviations, by using the book and the material provided
- Determine the meaning of a given abbreviation by using the book and material provided

Log-in and Participation Policy
Since this is virtually home study, participation will be monitored by your log in hours on canvas. The assignments and exam are recorded by Canvas. When it comes to zoom time, only the mandatory sessions require your attendance. If you are unable to make a general session, please contact me. Mandatory sessions will have multiple times to give you an opportunity to attend.
Instructor Initiated Contact Policy
Each week, there will have an announcement of zoom times, the expectation of the week, and what is due. Please, pay attention to these announcements. The best way to reach me is the Canvas inbox. A copy is sent to the outlook e-mail.
Student Initiated Contact Policy
Please contact me through the Canvas inbox. I am more than willing to arranged zoom (face time) if needed. I will try to respond as soon as I can.
Student to Student Contact Policy
You will be assigned to a group, but feel free to contact other classmates. My only request is that you do individual work on practices and exams. You will also have the chance to address the class at the larger zoom meetings.
Class Workload Expectation
How much time and work is required?
Be prepared for about 9 hours of work per week in this course. A three unit "lecture" course, by virtue of what is known as the Carnegie Unit Links to an external site., mathematically establishes a standard the amount of work expected from a student (and the instructor) in a 18-week course. All assignments and exam must be read inorder to recieve a grade. Refer to the rubric for the assignment of scores.

Late Work Policy
Please. pay attention to the announcements to find out when the assignments or exams are due. Since you have one week to complete assignments, I will NOT be accepting late work. Canvas will automatically lock out the assignment at 9 pm or after. If you begin the assignment at 8:50 pm, it will close the assignment at 9pm. Please complete the assignments before 9 pm.
